All Ireland Institute for Hospice and Palliative Care

Collaborative Networks between Service Providers

Palliative Care across the island of Ireland is currently characterised by a broad mix of established voluntary providers, new and evolving committed community groups and the statutory sector (HSE and Health and Social Care providers). Whilst there is a substantial base of experience, services can be isolated and lack the knowledge and infrastructure for sustainable progress. Further to differences in size and capacity, there are also underlying cultural variances, economic, social and educational, that arise from the divergence of communities over the last decades.

To address these differences, the AIIHPC will develop a 'twinning programme' between palliative care providers across the island of Ireland enabling shared learning, partnership building and knowledge and cultural exchange over a specified time period. This programme would be open to all services, and will provide funding to support the parties in working together to develop their capacity and capability. The Institute (and/or providers from across the sector) will host events annually to share the learning created through the programme and to disseminate the benefits across the wider sector.

Building on existing relationships (e.g. links with palliative care services in Africa, Asia, Canada and Australia) the AIIHPC will develop a strong international focus, twinning services from across the island of Ireland with international partners for reciprocal learning across the developed and developing world.
